About Marc 'vigor-Brown: Born in New Zealand in 1957 and currently residing and working in Napier, New Zealand. Following study of Architecture at Auckland University, Marc became immersed on a full-time basis with ceramic design. National success and recognition in the field of studio pottery was followed by an interest in the field of contemporary jewellery, precious metals, mixed media. Marc's interest in jewellery was given incentive when looking for jewellery to purchase. Mark realised there were areas of design that had not been explored. Inspiration for his work comes by the magic and beauty that permeates the everyday world. Marc looks at his own immediate environment for imagery. Both urban-found objects as well as those found in nature play a part in his work. Having worked in silver and gold for some 15 years, he now finds his work has become more imaginative and it is easier to exploit his sources of inspiration. More often than not he transforms what may be a mundane everyday object (or part thereof) and by manipulating it and producing the end product in silver or gold, he elevates it to the real of wearable art or functional ornament. Texture, form and design being important integral parts of Marc's work, are highlighted by the use of patination. Firstly the surface of the piece is chemically blackened and then the highpoints are polished through to the gold or silver underneath. This gives the work a depth of texture and form, and becomes an integral part of the overall design. Marc's fork bracelets have the koru design, the unfurling of the fern leaf, representing growth, movement, new life, new beginnings... Marc's Maori design pendants, the traditional designs in a 'contemporary' medium... Marc strives to ensure that his jewellery both looks and feels splendid. Ultimately he hopes to bring to people, happiness, when they see and wear his creations...
