Aotearoa.co.nz Aotearoa means 'land of the long white cloud', the name given to New Zealand by the Maori. Our
logo incorporates the koru shape. The koru is the unfurling of the
fern leaf. According to a Maori legend, Kupe, a Maori chief, was the first Maori to arrive in New Zealand. Kupe sailed from Hawaiki in or around 950AD in a canoe called Maataahourua. Kupe saw New Zealand spread out before him and said "he ao he aotea he aotearoa" which has been translated as "it's a cloud... a white cloud... a long white cloud". It wasn't until around 1350 that great fleets of Maori arrived and settled, but the name Aotearoa has stuck as the Maori name for New Zealand. Abel Tasman (1642) was a Dutchman who thought that Aotearoa looked like a place in the Netherlands called 'Zeeland', hence he named the country New Zealand. Our site promotes and sells New Zealand art, New Zealand and Pacific arts, crafts, gifts, jewelry, kiwiana and more... Maori design bone carvings, greenstone (jade, pounamu) carvings, wood carvings, Pacific pearl shell carvings, sterling silver designer jewelry, silver ferns, glass arts, limited edition prints, tuatara, bandannas, kete, siapo, tapa cloth, paua shell jewellery, fish arts, wooden bowls ...
