New Zealand's national symbol
The fern, New Zealand's national symbol. The Maori word for silver fern is 'ponga'. The leaves are dark green at the top and silvery at the bottom, hence the name silver fern. Sports and the silver fern symbol: the All Blacks, the Tall Blacks, the Silver Ferns, the Black Caps, the Black Sticks, our Team New Zealand and other teams all wear the fern symbol. The koru is our favourite shape, the koru is the Maori name for the fern frond which unfurls into the fern leaf. The koru symbolises new life, new beginnings, growth, movement.
