Description:

Shark bone carvings

The Māori would catch a shark by first catching a ray or skate to use as bait. Once the shark would take the bait, a lasso would be placed around the shark's tail (so the teeth wouldn't get damaged). The shark then towed the waka (canoe) until it was exhausted.

The shark's teeth were used for jewellery (earrings and necklaces) and trading. Some shark teeth would be used as knives (the teeth would be set in a wooden handle).
