Pāua

New Zealand paua shell has beautiful colours. Pāua is a species of abalone (Haliotis Iris). These pāua shells are only found around New Zealand. Pāua eats seaweed and lives clinging to the rocks at depths of 1-10 metres. Pāua is found around most of the NZ rocky shoreline.

Mangakuri beach, Hawke's Bay

One of the best NZ holidays was at Mangakuri (black dog) beach, south of Napier. We stayed on a friend's family farm and enjoyed diving for pāua and also catching crayfish in a craypot. We had to eat crayfish and pāua every single day. Tough times... Loved it. I would bike along the beach for miles and miles and miles. Magical and peaceful place...
