Fern trophy

The silver fern is widely representative of New Zealand and New Zealanders – Kiwis. It is an image to which all New Zealanders relate and is a powerful and emotional symbol of inspiration.

The symbol comes from the New Zealand ‘cyathea dealbata’, known as ‘ponga’ in New Zealand. Fern leaves are dark green on the upper side and silver underneath.

Did you know that the Maori laid the fern silver side up as track markers; in the dark they would lit up by burning torches. It was often used by Maori as shelter and bedding for sleeping on, due to the thin texture of the ‘hairs’.

The silver fern as an iconic symbol of New Zealand and has been used as the country’s sporting emblem since 1888, often displayed on the uniforms of New Zealand’s natinal sports teams, most notably our ‘All Blacks’ rugby and ‘Silver Fern’ netball teams. And our Emirates Team New Zealand!

Koru trophy

To the Maori people of Aotearoa, New Zealand, the koru is a tohu (symbol) of divine inspiration from nature. It is a symbol that represents an unfurling silver fern frond, New Zealand’s most iconic native plant. Another beautiful Maori trophy.

The fern shoot has a tip that remainse culred within itself that begins to unfold as it grows to become the fern leaf.

Koru symbolises new life, growth, strength and peace. It is an integral symbol in Maori art, carving and tattoos. The circular shape of the koru helps to convey the idea of perpetual movement while the inner coil suggests a return to the point of origin.

Kiwi trophy

Love our Kiwis… our NZ flightless bird, another great NZ icon. The kiwi is our national symbol and icon. “Kiwi” comes from the language of Maori, the indigenous NZ people. It means “hidden bird”. The association between Kiwis and NZ is so strong that often the word Kiwi is used to refer to the people of New Zealand.

Rimu

The majestic rimu is found throughout New Zealand. Mature specimens grow to a height of over 60 metre (200ft) and up to 1000 years of age. Heart rimu with a red/brown grain is one of the most beautifully figured woods in the world.

A growing scarcity, fueled by felling bans and ravenous demand has made rimu a highly sought after and priced decorative timber. This product is made from recycled NZ rimu. We also have a few rimu bowls available >>
