Pounamu carvings

Pounamu carvings created by our talented Māori carver Aden from Hokitika.

When we stayed at the lovely kiwi bach ‘Wai-iti’ in Punakaiki, the owner Vaughn told us about his friend Aden in Hokitika. Aden is a Māori master carver of Ngai Raukawa and Swedish descent. Aden has been carving New Zealand jade for over twenty five years.

It’s quite cool that Aden sources his own greenstone. And we always love the variety in colours when we receive Aden’s pounamu carvings.

Aden creates stunning carvings for Presidents and future Queens. Aden is the carver who created a stunning greenstone artwork for President Obama. He also created a beautiful greenstone pendant for the Duchess of Cambridge.

Our carver works from home and enjoys visitors to the gallery from all over the world. The pieces Aden carves are made from genuine New Zealand jade. The designs are a mix of traditional and contemporary Māori free form.

We visited Aden’s workshop twice while traveling the South Island (Te Waipounamu).

Aden’s greenstone pendants are a great addition to our Aotearoa.co.nz site.
