When we stayed at the lovely kiwi bach 'Wai-iti' in Punakaiki, the owner Vaughn told us about his friend Aden in Hokitika. Aden is a Maori master carver of Ngai Raukawa and Swedish descent. Aden has been carving New Zealand jade for over twenty five years.
Aden creates stunning carvings for Presidents and future Queens; Aden is the carver who created a stunning greenstone artwork for President Obama and a beautiful greenstone pendant for the Duchess of Cambridge.
Aden works from home and enjoys visitors to the gallery from all over the world. The pieces Aden carves are made from genuine New Zealand jade and designs are a mix of traditional and contemporary Maori free form.
We visited Aden's workshop twice while traveling the South Island (Te Waipounamu) and have a selection of his toki (adze) pendants, drop pendants, koru pendants, fishhook pendants and tiki pendants.
We hope to add more of Aden's beautiful pounamu carvings in the future.
