The manaia is a guardian spirit (a supernatural being) and plays an important role in the Māori world. According to the Māori every person on Earth has a Guardian Spirit which can be described as an unseen light surrounding each individual.During life this guardian is a protector from evil and untimely accident. And at death the guardian guides the spirit of the departed person safely to a spiritual doorway where it is re-united with the ancestors from the ancient homeland of Hawaiki.Te Manaia (the manaia) are usually depicted in side profile, symbolising their role as messengers (ie. part in the spirit world and part in the earthly world). They normally have the had of a bird (sky) the body of a man (earth) and the tail of a fish (sea) symbolic of the balance they have between the realms. The three fingers and toes have varied tribal meanings. To some they represent birth, life and death. To others they represent the three baskets of knowledge. And yet to others faith, hope and love. Sometimes Te Manaia is depicted with a fourth finger, symbolising the afterlife.Source: Mike Carlton - Māori artist]]></product_content>

<product_content><![CDATA[## Māori trophies Māori trophies. Lovely NZ trophy icons on a stand. Stand along trophies or souvenir. Very cool icons: the fern, the kiwi and the koru. Popular for corporate gifts, schools, conferences and special events. Great way to celebrate our Māori culture. Also very popular as a souvenir (these lovely Māori gifts are flat packed, so easy to put in your suitcase or to ship overseas.### Size of our Māori trophies: Fern trophy: 240mmx97mm (9.45"x3.82") Koru trophy: 235mmx90mm (9.25"x3.54") Kiwi trophy: 102mmx120mm (4.02"x4.72") ### Engraving Can be engraved. ### Fern trophy The silver fern is widely representative of New Zealand and New Zealanders - Kiwis. It is an image to which all New Zealanders relate and is a powerful and emotional symbol of inspiration. The symbol comes from the New Zealand 'cyathea dealbata', known as 'ponga' in New Zealand. Fern leaves are dark green on the upper side and silver underneath.Did you know that the Māori laid the fern silver side up as track markers; in the dark they would lit up by burning torches. It was often used by Māori as shelter and bedding for sleeping on, due to the thin texture of the 'hairs'.The silver fern as an iconic symbol of New Zealand and has been used as the country's sporting emblem since 1888, often displayed on the uniforms of New Zealand's natinal sports teams, most notably our 'All Blacks' rugby and 'Silver Fern' netball teams. And our Emirates Team New Zealand!### Koru trophy To the Māori people of Aotearoa, New Zealand, the koru is a tohu (symbol) of divine inspiration from nature. It is a symbol that represents an unfurling silver fern frond, New Zealand's most iconic native plant. Another beautiful Māori trophy. The fern shoot has a tip that remainse culred within itself that begins to unfold as it grows to become the fern leaf.Koru symbolises new life, growth, strength and peace. It is an integral symbol in Maori art, carving and tattoos. The circular shape of the koru helps to convey the idea of perpetual movement while the inner coil suggests a return to the point of origin. ### Kiwi trophy Love our Kiwis... our NZ flightless bird, another great NZ icon. The kiwi is our national symbol and icon. "Kiwi" comes from the language of Māori, the indigenous NZ people. It means "hidden bird". The association between Kiwis and NZ is so strong that often the word Kiwi is used to refer to the people of New Zealand.#### Rimu The majestic rimu is found throughout New Zealand. Mature specimens grow to a height of over 60 metre (200ft) and up to 1000 years of age. Heart rimu with a red/brown grain is one of the most beautifully figured woods in the world.A growing scarcity, fueled by felling bans and ravenous demand has made rimu a highly sought after and priced decorative timber. This product is made from recycled NZ rimu. We also have a small rimu bowl available >>#### Care This product is finished with heat/scratch resistant lacquer. It should be wiped clean with a damp cloth. #### Larger Māori trophies Our artist also creates larger trophies in various designs:[Pikorua](https://www.aotearoa.co.nz/products/aotearoa-large-double-twist-pikorua/) (double twist for friendship and love) [Fishhook](https://www.aotearoa.co.nz/products/aotearoa-large-maori-fishhook-trophy/) [Manaia](https://www.aotearoa.co.nz/products/aotearoa-maori-manaia-trophy/) [Tiki](https://www.aotearoa.co.nz/products/aotearoa-large-tiki-trophy/) Or check out our Cultural trophy awards: waka stern, koru spiral, toki, and more >>]]></product_content>

Wahaika are short club-like weapons usually made of wood or whalebone. They are used for thrusting and striking in close-quarter, hand-to-hand fighting. Wahaika (club) were used in close hand-to-hand combat to deflect blows. And also to strike the chest, head and wrist. ### Pūkaiora Many wahaika have a small figure carved on their side called a pūkaiora which represented a tribal war God that would guard over the warrior during battle.### Details wahaika club Size:39cmx13cmx2cm(15.35"x5.12"x0.79")Or check out our [large carved wahaika club](https://www.aotearoa.co.nz/products/aotearoa-carved-wooden-wahaika-club/)### More information about Māori wahaika The wahaika was a pre-European weapon that was traditionally used in hand-to-hand contact. Wahaika, which means “Mouth of the Fish,” was mostly made from wood or whalebone. The wooden wahaika is often carved with intricate designs. These weapons have a concave back and have a carved notch on the edge of the back of the weapon. Many also have carvings on the reke, and many have carvings of small human-looking figures near the handle. The weapons were used in battle, of course, but also used in speeches and ceremony to accentuate the delivery of a particular point where Rangitira wanted people to pay attention. As with the other Māori weapons, the wahaika were used in hand-to-hand combat. The warrior would thrust the wahaika into the body of their enemy, and since the wahaika has a sharp edge, much harm could be done.]]></product_content>

In battle it was common for toa (warriors) to take a long handled weapon such as a taiaha (long-handled fighting staff) and a short weapon such as a patu (club) tucked into a belt.Māori wore little into battle apart from a maro (kilt) or a tātua (belt). In some cases a tapahu (dogskin war cloak) or a pauku (cloak to shield spear thrusts), was worn.Māori did not use bows and arrows, so fighting was almost entirely hand-to-hand. Famous weapons were given names and handed down from generation to generation.### Taiaha (fighting staff) One of the most well-known Māori weapons is the taiaha. It is usually made from wood, though sometimes it is made from whale bone. Due to its shape, it is sometimes mistakenly referred to as a spear. The staff has a pointed end, and is usually between 1.5 and 1.8 metres long. The pointed end (the arero or tongue) comes out of the upoko (head) which then becomes the ate (liver) or tinana (body). It is used for stabbing, parrying (warding off blows) and striking.Source: Basil Keane, 'Riri - traditional Māori warfare - Rākau Māori – Māori weapons and their uses', Te Ara - the Encyclopedia of New Zealand.Story by Rangi Matamua, published 5 Sep 2013]]></product_content>

Another stunning NZ made gift from Aotearoa. Size huge manaia wall hanger:530mmx270mm(20.87"x10.63") ### The meaning of Te Manaia Manaia - spiritual guardian. They normally have the head of a bird (sky) the body of a man (earth) and the tail of a fish (sea) symbolic of the balance they have between the realms. The three fingers and toes have varied tribal meanings. To some they represent birth, life and death. To others they represent the three baskets of knowledge. And yet to others faith, hope and love.Sometimes Te Manaia is depicted with a fourth finger, symbolising the afterlife.Source: Mike Carlton - Māori artist]]></product_content>

    <product_title><![CDATA[Toki Pou Tangata]]></product_title>
<product_content><![CDATA[## Toki - Pou - Tangata (Ceremonial Adze) Authentic Māori art by our carvers in Rotorua.Beautiful Māori gift.As mentioned above, a toki pou tangata is a ceremonial adze. It was held by a rangatira (Māori leader of high rank) and was a symbol of chiefly authority. While it was mainly used for ceremonial functions, it could also be used as a weapon (however, this is debatable).### Toki pou tangata - more info by our artist: The other person that would have more than likely had one, apart from the chief, was the Tohunga (Priest). Some examples of their use would be:If a tree was cut down for making a Waka (canoe) or a Wharenui (Meeting house) then the toki pou tangata would be used for the first cut and would then be used again at the start of the project and on completion. It could also be used in Whaikorero (giving speeches, or debates or addressing the people) using it to gesture and emphasise a point or to give more vigour to the process. It is debatable whether it was used as a weapon though there is recording of chiefs taking them into battle alongside a weapon. They were also used to dispatch high ranking prisoners taken captive. ### Figure at the top and bottom The figure at the top that looks down the handle is protectively watching the rear of the Toki Poutangata. It can be attributed to an ancestor or an Atua (god) depending on who it was made for and if there was a theme surrounding the piece. The theme could be one of the many a myths and stories in Māori cosmology. The figure on this one is in the haka stance slapping the sides of the torso. The figure head at the bottom of the handle is called a koreke.#### This toki pou tangata This artwork is made from tulip wood (hardwood). The blade is a lovely piece of dark green pounamu (greenstone). The toki looks great on the stand that has some koru design on both sides. Beautiful artwork that will look good in your home or office.#### Size toki pou tangata: 35cm x 20cm x 5cm(13.78"x7.87"x1.97")]]></product_content>
