Cool and funny corten steel artwork ### About Kiwi The kiwi is a unique and curious bird: it cannot fly, has loose, hair-like feathers, strong legs and no tail.Kiwi are ratites. The closest relatives to today’s kiwi are the extinct elephant birds from Madagascar. They are also related to emus and cassowaries of Australia, and the extinct moa of New Zealand. There are five species of kiwi:Brown kiwi Great spotted kiwi\/roroa Little spotted kiwi Rowi Tokoeka Kiwi can live for between 25 and 50 years. Chicks hatch fully feathered. They emerge from the nest to feed at about five days old and are never fed by their parents. Juveniles grow slowly, taking three to five years to reach adult size. Are you ready for your Metalbird Kiwi?Source: Department of ConservationCheck out our [bunch of metal baby birds: tui, fantail and ruru >>](https:\/\/www.aotearoa.co.nz\/products\/aotearoa-metalbird-baby-birds\/)https:\/\/www.aotearoa.co.nz\/products\/aotearoa-metalbird-baby-birds\/",

But so wonderful when you do catch them with their tail fanned out.#### What do Fantail - Pīwakawaka eat Fantails use three methods to catch insects:Hawking: Used where vegetation is open and the birds can see for long distances. Fantails use a perch to spot swarms of insects and then fly at the prey, snapping several insects at a time. Flushing: Used in denser vegetation is called flushing. The fantail flies around to disturb insects, flushing them out before eating them. Feeding associations: the fantail follows another animal and also people, to capture insects disturbed by their movements. Fantails frequently follow silvereyes, whiteheads, parakeets and saddlebacks. Head to tail they measure around 29 cm and the average weight is about 175 g.They have acute hearing and are sensitive to light. They can turn their head through 270 degrees.#### More about ruru Morepork are nocturnal, hunting at night for large invertebrates including beetles, weta, moths and spiders. Ruru will also take small birds, rats and mice. They fly silently as they have soft fringes on the edge of the wing feathers. They catch prey using large sharp talons or beak.By day they roost in the cavities of trees or in thick vegetation. If they are visible during the day they can get mobbed by other birds and are forced to move.Source: Department of ConservationCheck out our [bunch of metal baby birds: tui, fantail and ruru >>](https:\/\/www.aotearoa.co.nz\/products\/aotearoa-metalbird-baby-birds\/)Other baby birds:[Metalbird baby tui silhouette >>](https:\/\/www.aotearoa.co.nz\/products\/aotearoa-metalbird-baby-tui-silhouette\/)[Metalbird baby fantail silhouette >>](https:\/\/www.aotearoa.co.nz\/products\/aotearoa-metalbird-baby-fantail-silhouette\/)https:\/\/www.aotearoa.co.nz\/products\/aotearoa-metalbird-baby-birds\/",

But if there’s one thing our mums do have in common, it’s that they’re always, always there. Dependable and wonderfully familiar, it’s that consistency that reminds us of sparrows, those lovable birds that populate our gardens so cheerfully, always there. The sparrow is also a famously excellent mother, attentive and nurturing, adapting at a moment's notice in order for her chicks to thrive. She watches her young with a careful, encouraging eye as they make shaky attempts at flight, guiding them with her voice. Our gardens and skies would be sorely lacking without sparrows, and our lives would be utterly unrecognisable without our mums. Everybody knows swallows. They have amazing flying skills. And also nest building skills. These are the 'welcome swallow',Welcome swallows are small fast-flying birds found in open country particularly around lakes, coasts, riverbeds and ponds.Their flight is circular and darting in style, and they may be seen singly, in pairs or in flocks. Flocks often perch en masse, lined up on fences or power lines. They were named ‘welcome swallows’ because they appeared in southern Australia as a herald of spring. Due to their elegant shape and flight, and their preference for nesting around buildings, swallows are noticed and appreciated more than most other small birds.### What do swallows eat Swallows forage aerially for small invertebrates. They occasionally perch on plants to take insects or sweep them up from the water. Swallows often drink while flying, scooping water from the surface of a lake or pond.Source: [NZ Birds Online >>](https:\/\/www.nzbirdsonline.org.nz\/species\/welcome-swallow)Check out our [bunch of metal baby birds: tui, fantail and ruru >>](https:\/\/www.aotearoa.co.nz\/products\/aotearoa-metalbird-baby-birds\/)",
