Hei Tiki

Hei Tiki

There are many stories that are attached to the hei tiki, from a symbol of fertility and feminine arts, to an expression of sexuality, power, and the generations to come. But, because it is such an ancient symbol, no one can be totally sure of the true and correct one. However, it can be agreed that it was the most prized and sought after form of adornment in traditional Maori society.

Firstly, the level of skill, time and commitment it required to create such a detailed piece of adornment was immense. The greenstone was shaped and formed after hours and hours (sometimes years) of grinding stone on stone by hand, a true labour of love.

In most cases the tiki was then passed down from generation to generation, and it was common belief that the tiki absorbed the power and influence of the person who wore it previously, therefore making it a very valuable possession.

The hei tiki is in our eyes, a symbol of confidence, admiration, commitment, leadership and acknowledgement of those who have gone before us yet stand behind us.

At Too Luscious we don’t have a factory, or machinery, we choose not to. Everything you see is made by us with our own two hands and only in limited runs. We make everything with pride and a passion for what we do and who we are and believe this is imparted into the piece that you own!

We believe Too Luscious Adornment should be worn as an expression of your identity and pride in who you are, what you stand for and where you are from (no matter where that is). It is also your personal connection to us and Aotearoa.

Mauri Ora!
