"The Glassblower" is owned by Andrew Firth, with a background in glass blowing, and Hiko Izumisawa, with a background in graphic design. Andrew has been working with glass since 1984, Hiko joined the team in 1995, they then began developing their own simple design and style. When making the glass, no moulds are used, it is all free-formed over a hot flame. This technique is called Lamp-work, where pre-made glass rods or tubes are heated in a flame produced by a bench burner. Simple tools are used to shape the molten glass, such as metal tweezers, and rods and flat blocks of graphite. "The Glassblower" is based in Akaroa, a French settlement in the South Island of New Zealand. |
