About the artists

Hazel Heron (Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Porou) I like to live my life through artistic means and introduce people to new ways of thinking - to expose them to the beauty in Maori culture. My aspiration is to follow in the footsteps of wonderful artists such as Robin Kahukiwa. My interests are children’s development and welfare.

Ana Kerehoma Ripia (Ngati Kahungunu, Ngati Raukawa, Ngati Toa, Ngati Huia, Ngai Tahu). I have enjoyed art since I was a child. I find it spiritual and relaxing. I am a Teacher Aid at a Maori School working with special needs children. I express my culture through Tāniko (tapestry), Harekeke (weaving) and Ngā Putiputi.

King of Diamonds. Maori design playing cards About the Artwork

Hazel drew her inspiration for the playing card families from traditional artworks. The "Kirituhi" contemporary art design and drawings are original, depicting the various suit symbols and unique wairua (spiritual values) of each family member. The Tioka (Joker) symbolises the European influence brought to Aotearoa in the 19th century.

Ana designed the Manaia or Spiritual Guardian, which is a bird-like figure in Maori mythology. It acts as a protector over the air, waters and land. This manaia is named Te Manu and protects the kaupapa (core values) of Te Manu Games.
