DECEMBER 2002

Wishing you a wonderful December month and a happy & healthy 2003.
We thank you for your support!

2002. Happy New Year.

The pohutukawa is our NZ Xmas tree,
pohutukawa trees can be found near the coastline
and are in bloom during December.

The pohutukawa tree in the above image is growing in Devonport,
just down the road from us.

The name pohutukawa is derived from the Maori words 'po-' and 'hutukawa'. 'Po' has many meanings, but can refer to the night or underworld. 'Hutukawa' is a head dress of red feathers which could be compared to the trees' crown of brilliant red blooms over summer.

The name 'pohutukawa' is also said to mean "splashed by the spray", an apt name for a tree commonly found by the sea.

more info from Project Crimson:
"To enable pohutukawa and rata to flourish once again in their natural habitat, and to enjoy the status of icon in the hearts and minds of all New Zealanders".

Our new logo...

Aotearoa means 'land of the long white cloud', the name given to New Zealand by the Maori. Our logo incorporates the koru shape. The koru is the unfurling of the fern leaf.
It represents growth, movement, new life, new beginnings...

Another nice story of our site being found:

I saw one of your bracelets on someone, here in Wales. I was really impressed. When she said that it came from New Zealand I thought I'd never be able to get one. I saw the name Aotearoa on some publicity for an Arts project in Wales, and not knowing what it was, I did a google search and found your website.

The world works in mysterious ways! The bracelet is a gift for my wife.
Diolch yn fawr iawn - Very many thanks.

Lord of the Rings... New Zealand, Home of Middle-earth

Brought to you by PURENZ our NZ Tourism Board site...
The voice of Lucy Lawless takes you on an audio visual journey through the varied and beautiful New Zealand landscapes which were used as a backdrop to Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Film Trilogy.

With stunning photographs and interviews with the cast and crew of the films, learn why New Zealand was the only landscape on earth that could have provided the locations for Tolkien’s Middle Earth. This behind the scenes journey is broken into five parts which focus on the interesting parallels between the fictional world and the real life country and people that helped realise it. Experience New Zealand, Home of Middle-earth.

"To win, you have to believe you can do it. You have to be passionate about it. You have to really "want" the result -- even if this means years of work. The hardest part of any big project is to begin. We have begun -- we are underway -- we have a passion. We want to make a difference.

We hope that you and as many of your friends as possible will join us. All the best from the blakexpeditions team onboard Seamaster and in Venezuela".
