Treasure box

These carved boxes date back to the beginning of the carving period of Maori people and were used for the storage of small prized possessions such as feathers of the extinct Huia bird, heitiki, and hei taringa.

Most of these boxes were ornately carved and became family heirlooms passed down from one generation to another.
