The kete Kete or carry bags were made for various uses. Those kete used when harvesting the kumara, holding shellfish or carrying individual portions of food, were usually woven from the green leaves of the harakeke (flax). The flax leaves would be collected, split into six and then woven according to the size required. Patterned kete were kept for use on special occasions and the flax had to be prepared before it was ready to be woven. Decorative elements were taken from other plants and from the soil. |
