Kay Phillips

ceramic artist from
Aotearoa,
New Zealand

New Zealand ceramics.

Kay started working with clay in Nelson 20 years ago, but has only over the last three years developed her part-time passion into a full-time obsession.

She now lives near the coast in the Bay of Plenty, between the sea and the bush, and the influence of both can be seen in her work.

She enjoys making things with contrast - huge works with tiny detail, rough, ‘found’ clay with highly refined and colored glaze, or chunky texture with shiny smooth detail.

Often she will add local volcanic rock and sand to give extra texture - altering the appearance of the clay and allowing larger pieces to be built with ease.

A strong Pacific influence is evident in her work, and she sees each one as ‘A Piece of New Zealand’.

Kay's work has been accepted in New Zealand exhibitions.
