A little about me, Joanna Bewg:
Married mother of two and a dog, I am originally from Newcastle in the North East of England. I am an Engineer by trade, and have worked for both the Royal Navy and Air Traffic Control in the UK.
My family and I moved to New Zealand with the dream of a less stressful lifestyle, more space and a healthy environment for our children.
I discovered glass after having my first daughter, when I had an overwhelming urge to rediscover a creative outlet. I had always been very creative at school, and somehow it got lost amongst the practicalities of life.
I dabbled with a few things, before discovering glass fusing, which appeals to me as it is a mixture of both artistic and technical disciplines. I trained with a glass artist in Brighton, on the South coast of England, and never looked back.
I work with art glass, iridescent glass and dichroic glass (dichroic means two colour), building gorgeous little individual piles which are then heated to a very high temperature before being cooled in a controlled manner. I don’t make any two pieces the same as I would find this very boring, and love the element of surprise when I open my kiln.
I would love to say that each piece is meticulously planned but creatively I just let the mood take me. I never have any idea of the finished colour, size or shape of the piece unless it is a commission.
