"Aotearoa" means "Land of the long white cloud", the name given to New Zealand by the Maori people. Most of our bone carvings are created byJoe and Sione Katoa. All carvings are carved out of beef bone. Our site started with 12 bone carvings... All codes, prices and sizes are stated underneath the carving or underneath the description of the carving or at the bottom of the page). All carvings come with a strong string of black waxed nylon. Please note that ordered carvings might have a slight change in size and/or design, as all carvings are hand-crafted. If you do wish a certain size, please let us know. Carving bones goes a long way back. We will give you a bit of history and short descriptions about our carvings. We also have interesting links to other sites. We wrap our carvings in 'tapa cloth'. Tapa is NOT a Maori medium, but it represents the background of our carvers, being born in Tonga, one of the Pacific Islands. Tapa cloth is made from the inner bark of a tree, the paper mulberry tree. Tapa cloth is a traditional handicraft and art form in the Pacific Islands. Have a look at 'siapo' (tapa cloth) from Samoa, one of the Pacific islands... The background image on our site is the artwork by one of our very talented New Zealand artists, Fern Petrie. Fern is part-Maori and lives in Auckland, but is no longer featured on our site. Where is New Zealand? We are experimenting with FLASH
